Can Öncü claimed pole position on Friday afternoon in the World Supersport class at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. The Turkish rider was the fastest in the Superpole session, securing his third pole position of the season. Teammate Yuki Okamoto qualified in 31st place.
The seventh round of the FIM Supersport World Championship got underway on a sunny and warm Friday at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli for Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing. After a strong start in Free Practice, the pace increased significantly during the afternoon Superpole session, which determined the starting grid for Race 1.
With a lap time of 1’36.755, Öncü topped the timesheets at the end of the session, earning his third pole position of the year and the seventh of his career. Following two disappointing races at MotorLand Aragón, both the Turkish rider and Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing are eager to return to success, with a podium finish firmly set as the target.
On the other side of the garage, Yuki Okamoto experienced a more challenging first day at Misano. The Japanese rider ultimately set the 31st-fastest time in the highly competitive Superpole session, leaving him with a difficult task ahead in Race 1.

“I am very happy with this pole position, especially after the weekend we had in Aragón. We had a good qualifying there but we couldn’t do much after the penalty in Saturday’s warm up. Today we started well in Free Practice and continued like that in the Superpole session. We were building up our pace and managed to set a very strong lap time towards the end. “The conditions here in Misano are tropical, at a circuit where we always enjoy coming. Can secured pole position after his strongest Friday of the year, showing both excellent race pace and several very fast flying laps. He completed three nearly identical laps that were all close to his pole time, so he is ready to race.On Yuki’s side, we made major changes to the bike after Free Practice in the morning, and in the Superpole session he was no less than 1.2 seconds faster. I think we have now found a good working window, and we will see how we can best prepare for tomorrow’s race. We are ready.”
The first World Supersport race, scheduled for 18 laps at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, will get underway on Saturday afternoon at 14:00h.
Öncü komt sterk terug met derde pole van het jaar op zonnig Misano
Can Öncü heeft vrijdagmiddag pole position behaald in de World Supersport klasse op het Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. De Turkse coureur was het snelst in de Superpole sessie en behaalde daarmee zijn derde pole position van het seizoen. Teamgenoot Yuki Okamoto kwalificeerde zich als 31e.
Op een zonnig en warm Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli begon vrijdag de zevende ronde van het FIM Supersport World Championship voor Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing. Na een goed begin in de vrije training werd het tempo in de middag flink opgeschroefd in de Superpole sessie, waarin de startopstelling voor Race 1 werd bepaald.
Met een rondetijd van 1’36,755 was Öncü de snelste aan het einde van deze sessie en greep daarmee zijn derde pole position van het jaar en de zevende van zijn carrière. Na twee teleurstellende races op Motorland Aragón is de honger naar succes bij zowel de Turkse coureur als Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing groot, en het doel is dan ook om terug te keren naar het podium.
Aan de kant van Yuki Okamoto verliep de eerste dag in Misano wat moeizamer. De Japanner noteerde uiteindelijk de 31e tijd in de zeer competitieve Superpole sessie waarmee hem een flinke opgave staat te wachten in Race 1.

“Ik ben erg blij met deze pole position, vooral na het weekend dat we in Aragón hebben gehad. We reden daar een goede kwalificatie, maar na de penalty tijdens de warm-up op zaterdag konden we niet veel meer uitrichten. Vandaag zijn we goed begonnen in de vrije training en hebben we die lijn doorgetrokken in de Superpole-sessie. We bouwden ons tempo geleidelijk op en slaagden erin om tegen het einde een zeer sterke rondetijd neer te zetten. Nu moeten we ervoor zorgen dat we daadwerkelijk vanaf de eerste positie starten, en daarna zal ik gewoon proberen te genieten van Race 1 morgen.”Yuki Okamoto (P31 – 1’38,863 | +2,108):

“Het zijn tropische omstandigheden hier in Misano, op een circuit waar we altijd graag komen. Can heeft pole position behaald na zijn sterkste vrijdag van het jaar, waarin hij zowel een goed racetempo liet zien als ook een aantal zeer snelle vliegende ronden. Hij heeft drie nagenoeg identieke ronden gereden die dichtbij zijn poletijd zaten, dus hij is klaar om te racen.Bij Yuki hebben we na de vrije training in de ochtend grote aanpassingen gedaan aan de motorfiets en in de Superpole sessie was hij maar liefst 1,2 seconde sneller. Ik denk dat we nu een goed werkgebied hebben gevonden en dan gaan we kijken hoe we ons het beste kunnen voorbereiden op de race van morgen. We zijn er klaar voor.”
De eerste World Supersport race over 18 ronden op het Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli gaat zaterdagmiddag om 14:00 uur van start.
