Can Öncü qualified fourth on Friday for the first World Supersport race of 2026. Teammate Yuki Okamoto set the 24th fastest time in the first Superpole session of the new season at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.
After completing two test days on Monday and Tuesday, the opening round of the 2026 FIM Supersport World Championship got underway on Friday. Under sunny conditions, a free practice session was held in the morning, followed by qualifying in the afternoon for the first race of the new season.
With a 1’32.450 lap time, Öncü significantly improved on his test pace and qualified fourth, making him the highest-placed Yamaha rider. Okamoto conceded just 1.294 seconds to the polesitter and finished 24th on the timesheets.

“The bike and I were a very good combination today. We did a good qualifying and we can be happy with this position. Now we are going to focus on the race tomorrow and try to get the best out of the machine and myself. Hopefully we can achieve a podium finish, and that should be a possibility looking at our pace. “We made a lot of improvements on the bike compared to the test earlier this week. We need to continue improving ahead of the race and then I think we can achieve a good result. “It was a good qualifying day for us in tropical conditions. Can qualified in a solid fourth position, while Yuki set his best lap time of the weekend. For that reason, we can certainly be satisfied at this stage. We approach the race with confidence, as we have mainly focused on race pace throughout the week. Yuki has improved in every session, so I expect him to make another step forward in the race; he has shown that he can be consistent. From Can, I expect him to fight for the podium, and that is also the objective for both races here in Australia before we return to Europe. We are really looking forward to lining up on the grid tomorrow.”
The first 2026 World Supersport race will start on Saturday at 14:30 local time (04:30 CET) at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.

Can Öncü heeft zich vrijdag als vierde gekwalificeerd voor de eerste World Supersport race van 2026. Teamgenoot Yuki Okamoto noteerde de 24e tijd in de eerste Superpole sessie van het nieuwe seizoen op het Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.
Na twee testdagen te hebben afgewerkt op maandag en dinsdag ging vrijdag de eerste ronde van het 2026 FIM Supersport World Championship van start. Onder zonnige omstandigheden werd ’s ochtends de vrije training verreden waarna het ’s middags tijd was om te kwalificeren voor de eerste wedstrijd van het nieuwe seizoen.
Met een 1’32.450 scherpte Öncü zijn tijd flink aan ten opzichte van de test en kwalificeerde hij zich als vierde, waarmee hij de best geklasseerde Yamaha coureur was. Okamoto hoefde slechts 1,294 seconde toe te geven op de polesitter en eindigde daarmee als 24e op de tijdlijst.

“De motor en ik vormden vandaag een zeer goede combinatie. We hebben een goede kwalificatie gereden en we mogen tevreden zijn met deze positie. Nu gaan we ons focussen op de race van morgen en proberen het maximale uit de machine en uit mezelf te halen. Hopelijk kunnen we een podiumplaats behalen, en dat zou mogelijk moeten zijn gezien ons tempo. Ik kijk ernaar uit om te gaan racen.”Yuki Okamoto (P24 – 1’33.409 | +1,294):
“We hebben veel verbeteringen aan de motor aangebracht in vergelijking met de test eerder deze week. We moeten ons blijven verbeteren in aanloop naar de race en dan denk ik dat we een goed resultaat kunnen behalen. “Het was een goede kwalificatiedag voor ons onder tropische omstandigheden. Can heeft zich op een keurige vierde positie gekwalificeerd terwijl Yuki zijn beste rondetijd van het weekend heeft gereden. Hierdoor kunnen we op dit moment zeker tevreden zijn. We gaan de race met vertrouwen tegemoet want we hebben de hele week eigenlijk alleen maar gewerkt aan het racetempo. Yuki heeft zich iedere sessie verbeterd dus ik verwacht opnieuw een stap in de race, hij heeft laten zien dat hij constant kan zijn. Van Can verwacht ik dat hij mee kan doen voor het podium, en dat is dan ook de doelstelling voor beide wedstrijden hier in Australië voordat we terugkeren naar Europa. We kijken er enorm naar uit om morgen aan de start te staan.”
De eerste World Supersport race van 2026 gaat zaterdag om 14:30 uur lokale tijd, 04:30 uur Nederlandse tijd van start op het Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.
