Can Öncü won the first World Supersport race at the Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours on Saturday afternoon. Starting from thirteenth on the grid, the Turkish rider fought his way through the field to claim his first WorldSSP victory with Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing after an exciting race. Teammate Yuki Okamoto equalled his best-ever result in the World Supersport Championship by finishing thirteenth.
Under sunny and warm conditions, the first World Supersport race of the weekend got underway on Saturday afternoon over nineteen laps of the Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours. In a highly impressive opening lap, Öncü immediately gained seven positions and after four laps, he had already moved into the podium positions. On the fifth lap, he made his first move for the lead, which the Turkish rider managed to hold for the majority of the race.
Öncü had to fight tooth and nail to fend off fierce competition, but ultimately proved to be the strongest rider at the French circuit. He claimed his first victory of the season and his first win with Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing. It was his seventh podium finish of the season and the eighth WorldSSP victory of his career.
Starting from nineteenth on the grid, scoring points would also be a major challenge for Okamoto, but the Japanese rider enjoyed a very strong opening phase as well. By the third lap, he had moved up to tenth position, although Okamoto was also involved in a fierce battle. With his eventual thirteenth-place finish, he equalled the best result of his career and scored World Championship points for the second time.
Can Öncü (P1):
“It was a very good race. After yesterday’s result in Superpole I was hoping for a podium finish in Race 1, but it looks like it works better for me when I have to come from further back on the grid. I’m very happy and thankful for the team because they have put in great work. During the race I was trying to stay calm, because in previous races I was a bit too excited. In this long summer break, Kenan taught me how to be more relaxed on the bike and it seems to work. Every day I was training and I put in a lot of effort. It looks like hard work pays off, and I’m very happy with this victory.”Yuki Okamoto (P13 | +16,852):
“Today was a very good day for the team. I made a good start but I had some problems with my arm, therefore I wasn’t able to keep my position. During the race I managed to keep a constant pace and score some points in the end. Still, I know I have a lot to learn. I want to say thanks to my team for their great work, and a big congratulations to my teammate for his victory.”Kervin Bos – Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing team manager:
“Ten Kate Racing is back at the top. Today, both Can and Yuki achieved their best result of the season. Things did not go our way yesterday, but as always, ‘Team Rocky’ managed to turn things around. Can was already very fast on Friday, but due to technical issues he had to start further back on the grid. He kept his focus and did today what we had been hoping for all season. He has secured that important first victory of the season, so I expect us to continue making further steps forward from here.Yuki also exceeded expectations today. Starting from nineteenth on the grid, he even made his way into the top ten for a while, showing that he is continuing to build more and more confidence with the Pirelli tyres. I expect both riders to take another step forward in Race 2 tomorrow.”
The second World Supersport race at the Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours will get underway on Sunday afternoon at 12:40 local time.
Can Öncü (P1):
