Can Öncü finished eighth on Sunday afternoon in Race 2 of the World Supersport class at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve. Starting from tenth on the grid, the Turkish rider was unable to challenge for the podium positions. Teammate Yuki Okamoto finished 21st.
After Race 1 on Saturday in Portimão ended without points, the motivation was high to come back stronger in the second World Supersport race on Sunday. Starting from tenth on the grid, Öncü got off to a good start and moved up to sixth place, but he would lose several positions early in the race. Towards the end, the Turkish rider was involved in an intense battle but ultimately had to settle for eighth place. After two race weekends, Öncü has 30 points to his name and is also eighth in the World Supersport championship standings.
Starting from 24th on the grid, it was also a challenging race for Okamoto. The Japanese rider maintained a consistent pace and had to work hard to defend his position. In the end, Okamoto crossed the finish line in 21st place.

“It was a disappointing result today in Portimão. Yuki finished 21st, and although that’s not the position we hope for together, he did ride a good and strong race. His fastest lap times came towards the end, and he managed to win several battles, so we need to carry that momentum forward. We hope to find some more improvement with him ahead of the Assen weekend.“With Can, we ultimately achieved disappointing results, especially considering he took pole position on Friday with a lap record. If you then go home without a podium finish, you can only conclude that it has been a disappointing weekend, so both the team and Can need to go back to the drawing board and see how we can improve this.”
Fortunately, we have a two-day test next week at the TT Circuit Assen, where we’ll have the opportunity to prepare for a very special anniversary weekend. Naturally, we want to celebrate that with strong results on track.”
The next round of the FIM Supersport World Championship will take place during the weekend of April 17–19 at the TT Circuit Assen in the Netherlands.
Öncü achtste in uitdagende tweede World Supersport race in Portimão, Okamoto 21e
Can Öncü is zondagmiddag als achtste over de finish gekomen in Race 2 voor de World Supersport klasse op het Autódromo Internacional do Algarve. Vanaf de tiende plaats op de grid kon de Turkse coureur geen vuist maken richting de podiumposities. Teamgenoot Yuki Okamoto eindigde als 21e.
Nadat Race 1 op zaterdag in Portimão werd afgesloten zonder punten was de motivatie groot om op zondag in de tweede World Supersport race sterker terug te komen. Vanaf de tiende startplaats op de grid kwam Öncü goed weg en schoof hij op naar de zesde plaats, maar al vroeg in de wedstrijd zou hij meerdere posities verliezen. De Turkse rijder was aan het einde van de race nog in een felle strijd verwikkeld maar moest uiteindelijk genoegen nemen met de achtste plaats. Na twee raceweekenden heeft Öncü 30 punten achter zijn naam staan en staat hij eveneens achtste in het World Supersport kampioenschap.
Vanaf de 24e plaats op de grid zou het voor Okamoto ook een uitdagende wedstrijd worden. De Japanner kon een constant tempo hanteren en ook hij moest hard aan het werk om zijn positie te verdedigen. Uiteindelijk passeerde Okamoto de finish als 21e.

Nu kijk ik uit naar de thuisrace van het team in Assen en we moeten heel hard werken om daar betere resultaten te behalen. “Het was een zware race, maar ik voel me iets positiever dan gisteren. Aan het einde van de race had ik een goed tempo en kon ik een aantal nieuwe dingen uitproberen. “Het was een tegenvallend resultaat vandaag in Portimão. Yuki is als 21e geëindigd, en al is dat niet de positie waar we samen op hopen, heeft hij wel een goede en sterke wedstrijd gereden. Zijn snelste rondetijden kwamen aan het einde en hij wist ook meerdere duels te winnen, dus dat momentum moeten we voortzetten. We hopen samen met hem nog wat meer verbetering te vinden voor het weekend in Assen.Met Can hebben we uiteindelijk teleurstellende resultaten behaald, vooral als je op vrijdag pole position pakt met een ronderecord. Als je dan naar huis gaat zonder podiumfinish kun je alleen maar concluderen dat je een teleurstellend weekend heb gehad, dus zowel het team als Can moeten opnieuw naar de tekentafel en kijken hoe we dit gaan verbeteren.
Gelukkig hebben we volgende week nog een tweedaagse test op het TT Circuit Assen waar we de kans hebben om ons voor te bereiden op een heel bijzonder jubileumweekend. Dat willen we natuurlijk gaan vieren met goede resultaten op de baan.”
De volgende ronde van het FIM Supersport World Championship wordt verreden in het weekend van 17 t/m 19 april op het TT Circuit Assen in Nederland.
