Stefano Manzi claimed pole position in the World Supersport class at Donington Park on Friday afternoon. The Italian rider set the fastest lap at the last moment in the Superpole session, securing his first pole position of the season. For teammate Yuki Okamoto, however, the race weekend has come to an early end after a heavy crash in the same session.
This weekend marks the seventh round of the World Superbike Championship, taking place at Donington Park. The action began on Friday morning with a free practice session, followed by the Superpole session in the afternoon. Weather conditions were exceptionally sunny and warm at the British circuit, with temperatures exceeding 30°C, making it a demanding day for both riders and machines.
After a strong morning session, Manzi started the Superpole session well, consistently featuring at the top of the timesheets. He saved his best for last and clocked a 1’29.450 lap to take pole position — his first of the season and also his first on the Yamaha YZF-R9. It is only the third pole of his World Supersport career.
For Yuki Okamoto, things went wrong very early in the Superpole session. Coming onto the main straight, the Japanese rider was caught up in another rider’s crash, leaving him nowhere to go and resulting in a heavy fall. Okamoto sustained a concussion and injuries to his chest and collarbone. The 25-year-old has been declared unfit to race and will therefore take no further part in the Donington Park weekend.

I’m happy with the effort the team put in after a challenging weekend in Misano, and feel we are I feel like we are in a good place moving into tomorrow. I’m happy to end the day with a pole position for the opening race tomorrow. “It was great to see how Stefano built up his day today. He started strong in the morning and we knew we were in a good position. He and the team fine-tuned the setup together and finished the job in qualifying. He is still in hospital at the moment, but we hope to see him back on the bike soon. The whole team wishes him a speedy recovery!”
The first World Supersport race at Donington Park, consisting of 19 laps, will start on Saturday afternoon at 13:35 local time (14:35 Central European time).

Stefano Manzi heeft vrijdagmiddag pole position behaald in de World Supersport klasse op Donington Park. De Italiaan wist op het laatste moment in de Superpole sessie de snelste rondetijd te rijden waarmee hij zijn eerste pole position van het seizoen te pakken heeft. Voor teamgenoot Yuki Okamoto is het raceweekend vroegtijdig ten einde gekomen na een flinke crash in de Superpole sessie.
Dit weekend wordt de zevende ronde van het World Superbike kampioenschap verreden op Donington Park. De actie begon op vrijdagochtend met een vrije training, gevolgd door de Superpole sessie in de middag. De weersomstandigheden waren buitengewoon zonnig en warm op het Engelse circuit met temperaturen van meer dan 30°C, waardoor het zowel voor de coureur als de machine behoorlijk uitdagend was.
Na een goede ochtendsessie begon Manzi sterk aan de Superpole en was zijn naam constant in de bovenste regionen van de tijdlijst te vinden. Hij bewaarde zijn beste tijd voor het laatste moment en met een 1’29.450 claimde hij pole position, zijn eerste van het seizoen en zijn eerste op de Yamaha YZF-R9. Het is pas zijn derde pole in de World Supersport klasse.
Voor Yuki Okamoto ging het al heel vroeg mis in de Superpole sessie. Bij het opkomen van het rechte stuk raakte de Japanner betrokken bij een crash van een andere rijder, waardoor hij geen kant op kon en hard ten val kwam. Okamoto heeft hierbij een hersenschudding en blessures aan zijn borst en sleutelbeen opgelopen. De 25-jarige coureur is ‘unfit’ verklaard waardoor hij dit weekend niet meer in actie komt op Donington Park.

Ik ben blij met de inzet van het team na een uitdagend weekend in Misano, en ik heb het gevoel dat we er goed voorstaan richting morgen. Ik ben blij dat we de dag kunnen afsluiten met pole position voor de openingsrace van morgen. “Het was geweldig om te zien hoe Stefano vandaag zijn dag heeft opgebouwd. In de ochtend begon hij al heel sterk en wisten we dat we er goed voor stonden. Hij en het team hebben samen de puntjes op de i gezet en het uiteindelijk afgemaakt in de kwalificatie. Maar waar ik nog veel blijer mee ben is het racetempo dat er is neergezet, we zijn klaar om te racen.Voor Yuki is de teleurstelling natuurlijk groot, gelukkig zijn de blessures niet ernstig. Op dit moment is hij nog in het ziekenhuis maar we hopen dat hij snel weer op de motor kan stappen. Het hele team wenst hem veel beterschap toe!”
De eerste World Supersport race over 19 ronden op Donington Park gaat zaterdagmiddag om 13:35 uur lokale tijd, 14:35 uur Nederlandse tijd van start.
